Family Friendly Living Room DONE

Are these room makeovers ever really finished?
I still have a few things left to tweak.
But for now, I'm calling this baby done.
I didn't think there was that much wrong before.
What we needed was space.  We needed more seating.
We also wanted it to be lighter and brighter ...
and a bit more fun.
(after)
(before)

What we did:
1.  Purchased a new sectional.
2.  Accidentally found a new rug... $125 on clearance!
3. Painted baseboards and french doors Swiss coffee.
4.  Reworked and repurposed and thrifted.
5. Moved the dining table to the living room to gain space.
5. Took updated photos of kids.

The TV will be moved from beside the fireplace to in front of the couch.  There is a built in all ready for it...
Kids' pictures got a quick update.
They are growing so fast I can't keep up!
My grandfather made this table, so it is something special to us; but what I REALLY want is a nice tufted ottoman.  I have my eye on a table we have that is dying to become an ottoman...
$10.00 Marshalls clearance.
Yep, I'm happy with how it turned out.
So much brighter, and I didn't even have to paint the walls!
Spring mantel is freshened with $10.00 Lanterns from Marshalls.
 I {heart} junction signs.
(They just happen to be my initials!)
I'm using one as a desk pad.
$10.00 thrifted desk painted out in Swiss Coffee.
(I seem to be on a $10.00 kick with this room!)
These thrifted trunks offer amazing storage.
My office area even has my printer close by; imagine that!
I decided to use two mirrors I already had in front of the old window frames to give them some dimension and a little of our "vintage meets modern" look.
Little owl was a yard sale find.
Still loving our rug, but it freaks the kids out.
They say it looks like a bunch of women.
Can you see the one on the right?
 Emerald green, sigh.
Kev carved our initials in this tree trunk turned side table.
I made all the chevron pillows.
Little box was made by cutting down a bee box.

Let's move on to the new dining room!
(Living Room Before)
Nothing wrong here... we just never used it!
Here it is now; as our new dining room!
See that sideboard?
This is how it looked when I got it:
$80.00 from a yard sale.
It comes in 5 pieces; 2 bottoms and 3 cabinets.

We did a primer coat to cover the yellow and it was exactly the color I wanted so we just stopped there.  Primer; no paint... Crossing my fingers it lasts.
The big chalkboard used to be a thrifted picture.
I painted the frame white and painted right over the picture.
Crown molding and baseboards got coats of Swiss Coffee.
Here's the picture, getting a coat of paint.
My sis-in-law made me the the ruler runner for Christmas.  It is so fun!
I love using wrapping paper on the table as another layer.  This one is a wood pattern.

We had our first dinner party in the new dining room on Saturday.
It worked like a charm; I think it's happy to be used again!
Bet you can't tell the piece I'm most in love with.
Dollar Store candles are one of my favorite things to decorate.
Another shot of the table before the food arrived.
Speaking of food...
Here is a view from my tiny little kitchen to the living room.  Take a left from the living room and there's the dining room, just FYI.  Don't get lost in my spacious house.  HA!
That's it!  Whew... so happy you all hung in there with me and came back to see the final project.  I can't wait to see what YOU'VE been working on!
xoxo jules

PS:
Our ranch style house is a 4 bedroom, 3 1/2 bath and 1967 square feet.  It was built in 1953 and foreclosed on in 2007 while it was in the middle of being "flipped".  It sat empty for over a year before we bought it from the bank, so there was a lot to do.  Lots of sanding, painting, spider chasing, vandalism repairing... let's just say there was a lot.
Can't wait to see what our next project will be... but for now, I'm gonna put up my feet and R.E.S.T.

  4. Julia,
This all looks magazine-worthy! My favorite is what you chose to feature on the windows you hung off to the side. Do you ever link up to decorating blogs? If not, you really need to. Try www.savvysouthernstyle.com for Wow Us Wednesdays (which really happen on Tuesdays). Or Feathered Nest Friday at www.frenchcountrycottage.com. You can find more on the party links at the bottom of my latest post. You're too talented to not be showcasing your decor.

    XOXO,
    Meredith

  5. I can't even describe how much I love this space. Will you please come to my house and do that exact same thing? It's peaceful and serene and so pulled together. The light you have is so great. I'm in love with your color choices, your accessories and the kids photos on the wall.

  6. I LOVE the whole space. The desk behind the sofa/sectional is a great idea. Mirrors on the windows, tree stump table, colors....large kids photos! I bet you are loving living in that wonderful, bright space. Great style!!!! Really! (I have been busy - sorry my response is delayed - I have been looking forward to see your reveal!)

  7. I keep looking at it. Your house doesn't seem small at all. Your kitchen island looks out to the family room - I love that. All your modern accessories look awesome with touches of rustic!

    1. Thank you SO MUCH Holly! That means a ton coming from you! I think the house seems bigger than it is because the people who tried to flip it raised the ceilings up; it's amazing how big it makes the rooms feel. But the bedrooms are tiny... and oh my goodness, my kitchen is a cave! Hope you have been busy doing a bunch of awesome stuff as well as spending time with your family! xoxo jules

  9. Beautiful room and I just tried to link it too and it told me the same thing. I don't know why this happens. Just add a highlighted link and you should be able to join. The link you have is not linked, but the button should work and isn't. I am sorry for the added step.

    Thanks for following!

  11. Holy cow Jules. This looks like a model home! SO beautiful. I adore it. And I love the juxtaposition between the modern lines of the sectional & the white vase with the rustic elements of the trunks, etc. And the large pics of the kids look so great too. Wow. I'm so happy for you. Thanks for letting us enjoy it vicariously.

    Warmly, Michelle
PS - I loved laughing about the "women" on the rug. And I gave up my living room too - it's now an office. We went from never using it to using it every day!

  12. More PS - Cute Jules, you need a "Pin-it" button. I pinned your room anyway, but it just makes it easier for your readers to do it. {Just make sure you are water-marking your photos with your blog name or website URL}.

    Love, Michelle
